From Maria Martental in Germany to Lavras in Brazil is a 13,000 km journey. By plane it takes 12 hours which is not very long. However, this journey takes one into another world.
I have been in this "other world" for one week now. At first one is struck by the different climate and vegitation. At the moment it is winter here. However, unlike the European winter there is no ice or snow. In fact it closely resembles the European summer. For the first time I have seen trees and flowers in blossom during winter.
There are 47 SCJ’s from 22 Provinces and regions attending the conference. Our presence here reminds us that we are an International Congregation. Over the last few days we have heard about the situation in the various provinces and countries in which we work. Some brothers have spoken about the economic and Church situation in their countries. Each country has a different economic and religious situation. It is striking that the various countries have a completely different vocation situation. For instance, the Indonesian, Polish and Brazilian Provinces are happy with their number of novices. In contrast, among others, the British-Irish, U.S., French Canadian Provinces have no novices at all. Nevertheless, each Province is involved in various initiatives in an attempt to attract vocations.
I have been struck by the good work done in Brazil for vocations. Here they stress the vocation of every Christian and each vocation director stresses this in their ministry. Last weekend we visited our parish at Formiga. We saw the work done by our brothers in promoting the Christian vocation. At Formiga we met with the parish council and heard from some young people involved in the parish vocation ministry. These young people meet regularly to talk about their various vocations and to discern their way forward in prayer.
Also remarkable is the promotion of vocations in every parish in Brazil during the month of August. The first Sunday is devoted to the vocation of the priest, the second to the family, the third to the religious and the fourth to the laity. Vocation ministry is firmly anchored in the pastoral ministry of every parish. We can learn from the experience of the Church in Brazil.
We have finished our first week at Lavras. Its been very intense but a rich experience of Church and Congregation. We look forward to the next few weeks.
Von Maria Martental bis nach Lavras in Brasilien sind es etwa 13000 km. Mit dem Flugzeug ueberwindet man diese Distanz in 12 Stunden. Das ist nicht lang. Und dennoch begibt sich derjenige, der sich nach Brasilien aufmacht in eine "andere Welt".
Eine Woche habe ich bis jetzt diese "andere Welt" erlebt. Am auffaelligsten ist zunaechst das andere Klima und die andere Vegetation. Momentan ist hier Winter. Der Winter ist hier aber kein europaeischer Winter mit Eis und Schnee, sondern gleicht von den Temperaturen dem europaeischen Sommer. In dieser Winterlandschaft habe ich bluehende Pflanzen entdeckt, die ich noch nie zuvor gesehen habe.
47 Dehonianer aus 22 Provinzen und Regionen sind nach Lavras gekommen. Ihre Anwesendheit macht die Internationalitaet unserer Gemeinschaft deutlich. In den vergangenen Tagen berichteten verschiedene Mitbrueder von ihren Provinzen und der Situation in ihren Laendern. So verschieden die wirtschaftliche und kirchliche Situation in den einzelnen Laendern ist, so unterschiedlich ist auch die Situation in der Berufungspastoral in unserer Kongregation. Waehrend Brasilien, Indonesien und Polen sich ueber gute Nachwuchszahlen freuen koennen, haben andere Provinzen wie England, Canada und die Niederlande keine Novizen. Aber trotzdem gibt es in den meisten Provizen und Regionen gute Bemuehungen und vielfaeltige Initiativen in der Berufungspastoral.
Eine besonders gute Arbeit konnten wir hier in Brasilien vor Ort erleben. Waehrend wir uns in Europa erst so langsam mit der Berufung aller Lebensstaende vertraut machen, ist dies hier schon laengst im Bewusstsein der Verantwortlichen in der Pastoral verankert.
Ganz konkret haben wir dies am vergangen Wochenende in der von unseren Mitbruedern geleiteten Pfarrei in Formiga erlebt. Bei einem Treffen mit Verantwortlichen der Pfarrei berichteten Jugendliche von ihrer Arbeit in der Berufungspastoral. So treffen sich Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene regelmaessig um ueber die verschiedenen Lebensstaende zu sprechen und in diesem Anliegen zu beten. Ebenso bemerkenswert ist, dass in Brasilien in jedem Jahr in allen Pfarreien die vier Sonntage im Monat August ganz im Zeichen der Berufungspastoral stehen. So bedenkt man am ersten Sonntag das Leben des Priesters, am zweiten Sonntag das Leben der Familie, am dritten das Leben der Ordensleute und am vierten Sonntag das Leben der Laien. Die Berufungspastoral ist hier somit nicht etwas, was nur die Verantwortlichen angeht, sondern konkret in der Gemeindearbeit verankert ist. Auf diesem Gebiet koennen wir viel von der brasilianischen Kirche lernen.
Die erste Woche in Brasilien ist vorbei. Ich bin gespannt, welch grossen Reichtum die brasilianische Kirche, aber auch unsere internationale Gemeinschaft, sich uns hier in den kommenen beiden Wochen noch eroeffnet.
