This was a year of exceptional vitality. First, there were the beginnings of the Congregation in the Diocese of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, about 800 miles to the northeast, in East-Central India. Fr. Martin had met two diocesan priests from Guntur at a retreat in Kerala during his first year in India. A friendship grew and while Fr. Martin was visiting them in Guntur, the question was raised by the bishop and priests as to whether our congregation could come to the diocese. The needs of the Church and society were great, much greater than in Kerala. The SCJ community met several times to discuss the issue. The decision was to request from Fr. General permission to open a minor seminary in Guntur as soon as sufficient personnel were available. The school year began in June, 1998, with nine candidates for our congregation living and studying in the diocesan minor seminary. Several months later Fr. Adrian van der Wilk (NE) moved into the seminary and became part of the staff.

The second event was opening our novitiate on Bolgatty Island in April 1998, in a very suitable building loaned to us gratis for two years by the Sisters of the Nativity. Fr. Sebastian Pitz (BM) joined us to serve as novice master. On April 30_th we received our first two novices, Mariano Fernandes and Placido Rebello, both from Goa. Since the building was quite large and the novices only two, we moved the program for new students who come to us after 12^th grade from Dehon Bhavan to this new location. Eight young men entered this program with Fr. Andrew Surdol (PO) as director.

The third event was the blessing and opening of our second residence in India on March 25^th. It can provide residence for 50 students of philosophy and theology. It May it opened its doors to 30 students. Shortly before the blessing Fr. Teja Anthara (IN), arrived becoming the 11^th member of the Indian District.

The fourth event was the sending of three of our members to Guntur, Andra Pradesh. Fr. Adrian serves in the diocesan minor seminary where our first year boys live and study; Fr. Teja serves as delegate superior for the community and formation director for our 11^th grade students in a rented house; Br. Leonard works in the diocesan program to assist the poor in terms of both charity and justice.

The first four and a half years were very full and we have experienced remarkable growth. We thank God who has blessed us in exceptional ways for reasons that only time will fully reveal. We thank our SCJ confreres and lay friends throughout the world. Our success is very much rooted in the support we have felt in every way.

Questo è stato un anno di eccezionale vitalità. Per prima cosa, c'è stato l'inizio della Congregazione nella diocesi di Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, a circa 800 miglia a nord est, nell'India Centro-orientale. P. Martin aveva incontrato due sacerdoti diocesani di Guntur ad un ritiro nel Kerala durante il suo primo anno in India. Ne nacque una amicizia e mentre P. Martin faceva loro visita nel Guntur, gli fu posta la domanda da parte del vescovo e dei preti se la nostra congregazione poteva entrare nella diocesi. Le necessità della Chiesa e della società erano enormi, molto più pressanti che nel Kerala. La comunità SCJ si riunì diverse volte per discutere la questione. La decisione fu di chiedere il permesso al P. Generale di aprire un seminario minore nel Guntur, non appena il personale fosse disponibile. L'anno scolastico iniziò nel giugno 1998 con nove candidati della nostra congregazione che vivevano e studiavano nel seminario minore della diocesi. Diversi mesi dopo P. Adrian van der Wilk (NE) si trsferì nel seminario e fece parte degli educatori.

Il secondo evento è stato l'apertura del nostro noviziato a Bolgatty Island nell'aprile 1998, in un bel edificio prestato gratis per due anni dalle Suore della Natività. P. Sebastian Pitz (BM) si unì a noi come maestro dei novizi. Il 30 aprile ricevemmo i nostri primi due novizi, Mariano Fernandes e Placido Rebello, ambedue di Goa. Poiché l'edificio era piuttosto grande e i novizi solo due, si stabilì di traslocare i nuovi studenti, dopo la 12a classe, dal Dehon Bhavan ai nuovi locali. Otto giovani si trasferirono con P. Andrew Surdol (PO) come direttore.

Il terzo evento fu la benedizione e l'apertura della nostra seconda sede in India il 25 marzo. Può accogliere 50 studenti di filosofia e di teologia. In maggio si è aperta ad accogliere 30 studenti. Poco dopo la benedizione, p. Teja Anthara 8IN) è arrivato come 11° membro del Distretto dell'India.

Il quarto evento è stato l'invio di tre dei membri a Guntur, Andra Pradesh. P. Adrian lavora nel seminario minore della diocesi dove i nostri primi ragazzi vivono e studiano; P. Teja ha la funzione di superiore delegato della comunità e direttore della formazione per i nostri studenti di 11a in una casa in affitto: Fr. Leonard lavora nel piano diocesano di assistenza ai poveri, in termini di carità e di giustizia.

I primi quattro anni e mezzo sono stati molto pieni e abbiamo visto una notevole crescita. Ringraziamo Dio che ci ha benedetto in modo eccezionale per motivi che saranno noti solo un giorno. Ringraziamo i nostri confratelli SCJ e i fratelli laici sparsi nel mondo. Il nostro successo è fondato nel sostegno che ci viene donato in tanti modi diversi.
