New General Superior Elected
Fr. José Ornelas Carvalho, SCJ
Fr. José Ornelas Carvalho, SCJ, provincial superior of the Portuguese Province, was elected today (May 27), as the 9th general superior of the Priests of the Sacred Heart.
Fr. Ornelas, 49, was born in Porto da Cruz Madeira, Portugual. He professed his first vows in 1972 and was ordained in 1981. Before being named provincial superior three years ago (he was recently named to his second three-year term), he was active in education and formation. He has also served as provincial secretary and as provincial councilor. Multi-lingual, he speaks Portuguese, Italian, English, French and Spanish.
"I would like to say that I will do all that I can but I won't," said Fr. Ornelas in accepting the chapter's vote this afternoon. "Instead I will say that I will do all that I CAN do... I will keep my heart open and listen to God's will."
Speaking to Fr. Virginio Bressanelli, the out-going general superior, Fr. Ornelas said that "it is a great pleasure to receive this trust from you. You have been a man of God and a brother. I hope that I continue to serve as you have."
And to the delegates, the new general reminded them that "Our work does not stop with these elections. We must continue to work together, beyond the chapter, in service to the congregation and the Church... may we continue to be guided by Fr. Dehon to continue the work that he began."
A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated by the newly elected general at 6 p.m. today. All SCJs within the area are invited attend.
Fr. Ornelas is the eighth successor to the congregation's founder, the Venerable Fr. Leo John Dehon. The newly elected general superior's photo is attached to this e-mail.

Le P. José Ornelas Carvalho, SCJ
Le P. José Ornelas Carvalho, SCJ, supérieur provincial de la Province du Portugal, a été élu aujourd'hui (27 mai 2003) le neuvième Supérieur Général des Prêtres du Sacré-Coeur.
Le P. Ornelas, 49 ans, est né à Porto da Cruz Madeira, Portugal. Il a fait sa première profession en 1972 et a été ordonné en 1981. Avant sa nomination comme supérieur provincial, il y a trois ans (il a été récemment nommé pour un deuxième mandat), il a travaillé en éducation et en formation. Il a aussi été secrétaire provincial et conseiller provincial. Polyglotte, il parle portugais, italien, français, anglais et espagnol.
"J'aimerais pouvoir dire que je ferai tout ce que je peux, mais je ne le dirai pas," a dit le P. Ornelas en acceptant le vote du Chapitre cet après-midi. "Je dirai plutôt que je ferai tout ce que je serai CAPABLE de faire... Je garderai mon coeur ouvert et serai attentif à la volonté de Dieu."
S'adressant au P. Virginio Bressanelli, le Supérieur Général sortant, le P. Ornelas a dit que "c'était un grand plaisir de recevoir cette charge de vos mains. Vous avez été un homme de Dieu et un frère. J'espère continuer à servir comme vous l'avez fait."
Aux capitulants, le nouveau Supérieur a rappelé que "Notre travail ne s'arrête pas avec ces élections. Nous devons continuer à travailler ensemble, au-delà du Chapitre, au service de la Congrégation et de l'Église... Que le P. Dehon continue à nous guider pour que nous poursuivions le travail qu'il a commencé."
Le nouveau Supérieur Général célébrera une messe d'action de grâces ce soir, à 18h00. Tous les confrères de la région sont invités à y participer.
Le P. Ornelas est le huitième successeur du Fondateur de la Congrégation, le Vénérable P. Léon Jean Dehon. Sa photographie est jointe à ce courriel.
